Driveway & Patio Cleaning in Peacehaven

Peacehaven is a grid, and the grid is the reason the work here is so consistent.

The town was laid out as plotland in the 1920s, sold off in generous rectangular plots, and filled in gradually over the following sixty years. What that produced is a street pattern of wide frontages, mostly bungalows and chalet bungalows, and almost every one of them has been surfaced for two cars at some point. Where Seaford has variety, Peacehaven has repetition, and my quotes here cluster tightly around the same numbers.

The most exposed paving I work on

There is nothing between a Peacehaven front garden and the Channel. No trees, no ridge, no other row of houses. On the south side of the town the drop to the sea is a few hundred metres of open grass.

That exposure changes three things.

Salt loading is heavier and more constant than at Seaford, where the town sits slightly back and the bay offers some shelter. Surfaces here are effectively under permanent light salt deposition, and because salt holds moisture the paving spends far more of the year damp than the rainfall figures alone would suggest.

Wind-driven rain hits the surface horizontally rather than falling on it. That is what scours joint sand out of block paving, and it is why Peacehaven drives lose their joints faster than anywhere else I go. If your blocks have started to rock slightly underfoot, this is why.

Drying is fast when the sun is out and the wind is off the land, which is genuinely helpful. A Peacehaven drive will often be dry enough to re-sand the same afternoon when the equivalent job at Uckfield would need me back the next day.

Re-sanding matters more here

The general argument for kiln-dried re-sanding applies everywhere. On this clifftop it is not really optional.

Block paving works because sand in the joints transfers load between blocks and holds the whole surface together as one flexible unit. Lose the sand and each block is on its own. Given the rate at which wind-driven rain strips joints here, a Peacehaven drive that has been washed and not re-sanded is genuinely worse off than one that was left dirty.

That is also the case for the joint-stabilising sealer, which is the one product I recommend more often in this town than anywhere else on my list. It binds the top of the sand into a firm plug that horizontal rain cannot lift out.

Telscombe Cliffs and East Saltdean

I treat these as the same working area and they are the same job. Telscombe Cliffs is the same plotland pattern and the same exposure. East Saltdean sits slightly lower and picks up a little shelter from the shoulder of the down behind it, which shows up as marginally slower algae growth and not much else.

What it costs

A typical Peacehaven frontage of 35 square metres of block paving comes out at £192.50, cleaned and re-sanded. Add the stabilising sealer on a separate dry visit and you are looking at another £262.50 for the same area, which is the point at which most people want to think about whether they want it. My honest answer here is more often yes than it is anywhere else.

Concrete frontages are £4.50 a square metre. The minimum job is £150 and it rarely binds in this town, because the frontages are large.

Getting here

6 road miles from Seaford, about 14 minutes via the A259 west past Newhaven. Travel is my cost to carry, so the square metre rate and the minimum charge are the same here as they are on my own street.
